An overtly simplistic description of Astrology is said to be the study of the stars and how their movements affect our life on Earth.
The movement and changes in positions of stars and planets DO NOT affect us. What we see in the stars and the motion of the planets is a reflection of what is actually happening on Earth. There are many cycles in our lives, from the daily rotation of the planet, to the yearly revolution around the Sun, to even larger cycles. These are reflected in the planets and stars as well.
It would be more accurate to say that these movements are reflective of the cycles that are happening, on Earth and throughout the Universe. And, they don’t predict specific events as much as they show us the influences that are happening around us. The energies that influence the movements of other ‘heavenly bodies’ in the universe also impact the humans residing on earth.
So a better definition of astrology is: The study of the motions of the planets and stars and how they reflect the influences of forces and energies on our lives.
Personally, I believe one should not discard this tool as freely as just some gibberish. It is an important tool that can help us chart the life path better. On the other hand one cannot allow just astrology to guide us. It can be a factor in helping us understand what influences are impacting our lives at a given time, and make informed decisions.
In the end, you have to use your own better judgment to make decisions in your life.

Dear Bad, a lot of personal experience with astrology, accurate predictions and forecasts of self and those around me, prompted me to write this blog. A lot that is said here is logical and scientifically plausible.
In case you disagree with my views given here, please elaborate.

There are a whole host of ways in which personal interpretations of something’s effectiveness can go wrong, and it is my experience that this is very often the case for astrology. No test of astrology’s effectiveness I’ve ever seen has established either a) it’s ability to double blind match readings or predictions to people b) that different astrology readings are even consistent with each other.

Dear Bad, I agree with your point completely. every human has a different way of interpreting astrology. However, the periodic influences (dasha – antardasha) readings will always remain the same.
Astrology is not a magic art that tells you what will happen when. For me it is a science that makes one aware of the influences that impact our life.
For example, if for a particular time period, astrology states is not favorable for one’s personal relationships, it means:
The efforts spent in personal relationships may not bear fruit proportionate to the efforts one put in it. This however does not mean that you do not have a choice. Its your choice, if you would like to swim against the current, and pursue personal relationships. Equally your choice, if you would like to take advantage of the current and focus on other things, like one’s professional life.
Have a nice day.

How can one establish that there are such influences and that they can be measured or interpreted in such a way that they consistently tell us anything about anything?
How on earth can someone reasonably test to see if this statement is accurate or meaningful and determine whether there is such a current in the first place?

Test it I did. With a good astrologer. He read people’s life and deepest secrets, unknown to anyone in this world, like an open book. This has been repeated by him for several friends of mine, who have consulted with him. The only way to test is to ask for predictions on what would have happened on the past. Because past is certain and unchangeable. This is a test for non believers on whether astrology can actually predict anything or not.
For the future, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. keep the predictions handy, and map back to whats happening in your life v/s what had been predicted for that time period in the past.
For a really detailed explanation visit another really good blog on this subject that I found on wordpress: http://sangitapuri.wordpress.com/2007/08/31/predictive-astrology-science-or-superstition
